I was up until 4 a.m. last Saturday, studying for my Legal History and Constitutional Law classes, while the rain pounded on our glass windows. It had started raining around the time I got off work at 7 p.m, and started beating hard around midnight. It didn’t cease until I fell asleep before daybreak. It was still raining when I woke up and left for school at around 9:30 a.m., but I didn’t think much of it. If anything, I was just a bit annoyed at the rain, because I didn’t have an umbrella.
By the time I reached Katipunan extension, though, the cab had stalled. We were not moving, and I was getting late for class. I found out that another classmate was also stalled. By the time the cab got to the Ateneo area, cars bound for the north were turning back, because the flood had risen to almost knee-level. There were a couple of cars that braved the south-bound lane, but they were swimming in the water. We turned around to look for alternate routes to UP, but then I received a message from my classmate that all roads to UP had been blocked, and that classes had been suspended for the day. We couldn’t go anywhere, so she and I agreed to meet up at McDonald’s Katipunan to pass the time and wait for the rain to stop and the floods to subside.

I found out today that the head lawyer of Sulpicio Lines belong to the same organization as I.
I had seen him before in previous functions and I had read about him in the papers, but I didn’t make the connection until this morning, when he was the butt of friendly jokes at our leadership training.
I wondered if anyone in that room honestly believed that the shipping line is at fault. They seemed to be blaming the weather bureau. I don’t know if they said what they said because that was what they really believe, or if they were just being polite.
These past few weeks we’ve read and heard about how Sulpicio Lines has tried to squirm out of responsibility.
So when I found out that he was the Sulpicio lawyer, I thought about going up to him and talk to him (and maybe scourge him).
But I made the mistake of waiting until the program was over, and by then I had a clearer mind. He was there as a person, not as the lawyer of Supicio Lines, so I let it go. And I thought, he is only the lawyer, maybe he was just doing his job.
But if you’re a lawyer, would you defend a serial killer? (I say serial killer with conviction.)
They say, though, that lawyers cannot choose their clients, so I don’t know what to think.

I rarely watch news on TV. The few times that I do, I am reminded that the Philippines is hopeless.
I’ve been following the news on the disaster that struck MV Princess of the Stars, but it was my first time to watch it on TV last night. It’s different reading about the news from actually seeing the contorted faces of those who are in pain for the loss of their loved ones. The meaning is taken to a different level.
I live just a block away from the center they put up to accommodate the relatives of the sunken ship. My housemate says it’s terrible there. I’ve been thinking of checking it out, but I doubt I’d want to be there. Most of the passengers on that ship were Cebuanos, and quite a few people I know know someone on that ship. I cannot imagine being in their position.
I also cannot imagine how scary it must have been for the passengers to be slapped with waves as big as a mountain. What were the last few minutes of their lives like, especially for the elderly and the children?
