PhotoHunt: Scary
Filed under Photohunt, the good earth, travel
Brace yourself, because even I, don’t like looking at this photo:
See the green coils around the tree?
These are green tree pythons or Morelia viridis. They are a non-venomous, arboreal (refers to animals that live in trees) snake species found in Indonesia, the island of New Guinea, and Australia. They like coiling around tree branches to rest there, as you can see. They sleep during the day and forage for food at night.
I don’t like snakes. Just looking at them (and even their photos) make me cringe. There were several kinds of snakes at the Singapore Zoo, the famous Anaconda included, but I wasn’t able to take lots of photos because I was in a hurry to get out of the area where the snakes were.
But, looking at this photo now, I must admit that I like the color of the green python—vivid green (I like green!) with spots of white that look like crystals when viewed under a certain shade of light. It makes them blend well with the trees. Fortunately, there aren’t green pythons in the Philippines, so no worries about mistaking them for leaves.
(This is my third PhotoHunt entry about animals. I seem to have taken my animal protection realization to heart, eh?)

I mustr admit I find snakes scary, but I wouldn’t mind if they were safely away behind glass. I just don’t want to meet one!
yikes! python is scary
i don wanna meet one either!
yay! scary indeed. but i like green colored snakes the most!
reminds me of the first harry potter movie
ayaw ko din ng snakes,ke me venom o wala
@A
but they look slimy and slithery. i don’t like seeing them even in pictures.
@annant
they are! i think they’re the ones that kill their prey by coiling around them and suffocating them.
@bingskee
me, too. but there’s a danger there. it’s easy to mistake them for plants. you could accidentally step on them or touch them. they might not be venomous, but i’m sure they bite if you disturb their peace.
@inyang
wasn’t it the second? the chamber of secrets?
@jam
pareho tayo. pwede ka rin kasing mamatay sa suffocation if they wrap themselves around you.
snakes make me squirm… don’t like them
you’re not the only one.
Cool snake; yeah, oddball here likes snakes (anybody surprised?), with at least three brown garter snakes happily coexisting in my yard here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Garter_Snake)
Pythons are indeed constrictors, but they can still be dangerous to those too big to eat on account of their sharp teeth and potential for an infection. Green tree pythons are much less dangerous than, say, ball pythons though. I’d sure love to see one of those beautiful animals in its natural habitat someday.
what?! you mean there were snakes freely roaming in your yard when i was there? don’t they bite?
I love snakes. For my grandson’s 4th birthday we had a reptile party. The “Reptile Man” came with his collection of snakes, spiders, lizards, etc and we all got to hold them and learn about them. Those green ones in your picture are absolutely beautiful!
and i thought all kids are scared of snakes. you have brave brood!
Those are some very pretty snakes. They are the ones that I like the best in terms of color.
Thanks for stopping by!
i dont like snakes…they’re crap to me/..
@brine queen
i think green pythons are the prettiest, too. they don’t look as slimy as the other snakes.
@tanchi
same here.
@stox:
Yep, I’m sure they were around there somewhere. They don’t bother people, and they just run away if you get very close. I mostly protect them from the cats, and don’t bother them, and they keep small pests in the yard down without using pesticides. It’s a win-win situation here.
BTW snakes are most certainly not slimy. They’re dry and smooth and, um, room temperature. It’s like touching a really finely finished piece of wood, only soft. IMO tame snakes are a real pleasure to touch in much the same way a cat or other pet can be.
@ Deborah:
I had an experience like that through a local museum when I was in elementary school. Still remember it fondly now almost 20 years later.
oh. so garter snakes are shy? they don’t bite or wrap themselves around you? and they are afraid of cats, too? i thought it was the other way around. i have this stereotype of snakes, you see..
i know they’re not slimy. i learned that at the zoo. but they do look slimy. and i can’t imagine petting them like i would pet a cat!
Garter snakes don’t want anything to do with something the size of a person, they just want to be left alone. Even a cat with its claws is stronger than one of them. While garters can bite with no venom, they normally just make a really bad smell when scared. Supposedly their bites itch a lot because of something in their saliva, but I’ve never been bitten or met anyone who has.
The only snakes around here that are any danger are copperheads (bad) and timber rattlesnakes (deadly). Even with those, they won’t pick a fight with something they can’t eat. The only people I’ve ever even heard of getting bit were those who were asking for it, either trying to kill the snake or pick it up. I guess you might get bit if you managed to sneak up and step on it, but every time I’ve gotten close they’ve run away.
i’ve heard of timber rattlesnakes in House MD. dr house said they are deadly. heh. (me, fangirl).
that’s what snake-lovers tell me too–that snakes don’t bite unless you hurt them. but i still won’t go near them if i have a choice not to.
Hello Light! Im back… been sick… nasa pinas ka pa ba? jacq said magkape raw tau pagpunta q ng manila hehehe
… and i hate snakes too… kahit ano pang klase ng snake yan…
yes, i’m here. when are you going to manila? i’m going there too sometime this month. let me know when you are there so we can meet up.
i hate snakes too. just looking at them make me cringe…eeeckk. never had the chance to pass by SG Zoo. maybe next time. looks like a fun place excpt for the snakes heehee.
you’re not alone.
YICK!!!! They are scary. Good thing they are in a tank. Eww.

you’re welcome. i like your photo hunts. thanks for visiting, too.
Wow! You seem to have been gone from photohunting a long time (me too actually)… I agree, this one’s really scary… I don’t even want to imagine how it would feel like to have one of those coiled around my neck… urrgghhh!
Hope you’re well btw
i’ve been told that snakes don’t hurt people unless you hurt them too. but still, i wouldnt go near them. why should i when there are cuter and tamer pets around?
i took a break from photohunt. it was beginning to look like most of my blog entries were photo hunt entries, and i didn’t like that. i’ll go back photo hunting when i can have the time to post decent text entries.
